In the simplest knitted fabrics, all of the stitches are knit or purl; these fabrics are denoted as stockinette and reverse stockinette, respectively. Short and tall stitches may also alternate within a row, forming a fish-like oval pattern. Cable needles are a special case of dpns, although they usually are not straight, but dimpled in the middle. In spinning, the fibers are twisted so that the yarn resists breaking under tension; the twisting may be done in either direction, resulting in an Z-twist or S-twist yarn.
