In very simple cases, knitting can be done without tools, using only the fingers to do these tasks; however, knitting is usually carried out using tools such as knitting needles, knitting machines or rigid frames. The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them.
You could end up so good at it, and love it so much that you could start your own business. Some people prefer circular needles because they are more comfortable to use and you can knit both in the round or back and forth like straight needles. Now wind your yarn over cross of two needles, over the right hand needle.
The choice available is vast and the decision depends on what garment you want to create. All in all choosing your knitting yarn is a pleasurable experience. Circular needles are typically 24-60 inches long, and are usually used singly or in pairs; again, the width of the knitted piece may be significantly longer than the length of the circular needle.
Most new knitters should start with some of the basic patterns listed above and work on mastering basic stitches. But, that's the essence of knitting.
