Welcome to the wonderful world of knitting! Even if you've been here for a while, there is always something new about this most fascinating craft! Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other.
A beginner is naturally clumsy because they are not comfortable with using two needles. To compete with the speed of the new knitting machines, many of the cottage industries started to knit garments in flat pieces which were sewn together; they worked piecemeal. It is important to know the size of your knitting needles because their size is related to the size of your stitches and, implicitly, to the appearance of the finished work.
However, such circular wales are possible using Swiss darning, a form of embroidery, or by knitting a tube separately and attaching it to the knitted fabric. If they are not secured, the loops of a knitted course will come undone when their yarn is pulled; this is known as ripping out or unravelling knitting. The first and most common type consists of two slender, straight sticks tapered to a point at one end, and with a knob at the other end to prevent stitches from slipping off.
Good luck with your knitting. You watch it come to life as you go, and little by little, your knitting becomes reality.
