The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them. Knitting as an art and a craft was kept alive only as a hobby
To compete with the speed of the new knitting machines, many of the cottage industries started to knit garments in flat pieces which were sewn together; they worked piecemeal. There is a cylinder with slots for the needles in the machine and the needles have latches. In some cases, a stitch may be deliberately left unsecured by a new stitch and its wale allowed to disassemble.
Now wind your yarn over cross of two needles, over the right hand needle. Knitting is the delicate balance of holding needles and continuously feeding yarn until a pattern emerges. A baby blanket is the perfect place to practice more complex pattern stitches.
