The process of knitting has three basic tasks: (1) the active (unsecured) stitches must be held so they don't drop; (2) these stitches must be released sometime after they are secured; and (3) new bights of yarn must be passed through the fabric, usually through active stitches, thus securing them. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other.
You will know how to do something that not many people know how to do, but might wish they did. Now count the stitches, if they are all there, turn the right knitting needle around and put it in the left hand. To start you can even make some simple combination of stitches.
First you have to take the yarn in front of the needle, then insert right hand needle in first stitch on left hand needle. Knitters have developed methods for giving the illusion of a circular wale, such as appear in Celtic knots, but these are inexact approximations. A beginner is naturally clumsy because they are not comfortable with using two needles.
Not only will this provide a nice social outlet, but your new knitting friends may also be able to help you locate and use new knitting patterns and new ideas for knitting projects. Even if you're a pretty proficient knitter, this isn't the time to learn a new technique or work with a skinny fingering-weight yarn that will take forever to knit up.
